River Westbourne

Over the short distance that the River Westbourne flows it passes under and by numerous locations associated with music, musicians and performance venues. No other London river, hidden or otherwise, can boast this.

A nine-mile guided walk with David Fathers author and illustrator of  London’s Hidden Rivers starts on the western edge of Hampstead Heath. The now hidden River Westbourne rose in a location made famous by a painting, ‘Branch Hill’ by John Constable and it dips under the house once owned by Paul Robeson. The stream then passes where Sir Adrian Boult lived on Cannon Hill and The Moonlight Club (once a venue for the Rolling Stones, Cream, Stevie Wonder etc). Close by is the location where the Beatles were rejected by Decca Records. A mile or so later the Westbourne flows immediately below the BBC Maida Vale Studios.

Once beyond Hyde Park and the Serpentine, where once the river flowed, it passes under the flat where Judy Garland died; by the music venue Cadogan Hall and finally into the Ranelagh Gardens where Mozart performed, aged eight years old.

The tour will also feature other notable points of interest along the route and places to hear the River Westbourne flowing beneath your feet.

I also wrote a feature on the River Westbourne for Londonist.com
